Solon, US swimmers dominate sectionals
By TIMES STAFF
The teams from Solon and University School powered their way to sectional championships last week in the first year of two Ohio divisions for boys' swimming.
Led by senior Chris Gluvna, Solon won four of the eight individual events and all three relays to outdistance the competition in the Division I sectional held at Mayfield High School. The Comets totaled 579.5 points to easily outscore second-place Mayfield, which finished with 299 points.
Setting the table for a possible first-ever Division II boys' swimming state championship, University School won all but one event in the sectional hosted by Hawken School in Chester. With senior Ian Stewart-Bates winning both distance freestyle events and senior Tyler Bailey taking both freestyle sprints, the Preppers racked up 585 points to finish far ahead of Orange, which was second with 285 points.
In Division I, Solon's Gluvna was a double individual winner with victories in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.85 and the 100 breaststroke at 1:03.14. In addition, he swam on two of the Comets' winning relays.
Other individual winners for Solon were senior Greg Lavins in the 50 free with a time of 23.80 and sophomore Jamie Gallagher in the 500 free at 4:53.80.
Lavins, Gluvna, junior Terrence Wong and sophomore Dan McMahon opened the competition by winning the 200 medley relay for the Comets in 1:42.81. Gluvna, Lavins and McMahon were joined by Gallagher to win the 200 free relay in 1:33.13. Gallagher, sophomore Dan Telljohann, senior James Hrivnak and Wong wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 free relay in 3:24.09.
In addition to double winners Stewart-Bates and Bailey, University School picked up sectional crowns in Division II from sophomore Mike Gaudiani, 1:59.20 in the 200-yard individual medley, freshman Russell Stack, 55.05 in the 100 butterfly, and sophomore Korey Schneider, 59.47 in the 100 breaststroke.
The only swimmer to prevent a total sweep for the Preppers was Chagrin Falls junior Jonathan Marc, who won the 100 backstroke in 56.28.
University School's 200 medley relay of sophomore Ben Stewart-Bates, sophomore Andrew Malone, Stack and Gaudiani began the victory parade with a time of 1:42.38. Bailey, Ian Stewart-Bates, Malone and Gaudiani teamed up for the win in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:28.83. Bailey, freshman Nicholas Crane and the Stewart-Bates brothers capped the meet by winning the 400 free relay in 3:16.22.
If it hadn't been for University School, the Orange team would have taken more than its share of victories. The Lions finished second behind the Preppers in all three relays, including a close finish in the medley, and bested the rest of the field in three individual events. Other Chagrin Valley schools in the team scoring were: Chagrin Falls, third with 188 points; Kenston, fourth, 171; West Geauga, fifth, 138.5; Hawken, eighth, 123; and Gilmour, 10th, 101.5.
