Comets swim to boys, girls district crowns

It was all Solon in last weekend's Division I district swimming championships at Cleveland State University as the Comets brought home championships for both the boys' and girls' teams.
The girls captured two individual events and two of the three relays to ring up 286 points and pull away from second-place Strongsville, which finished with 211 points. Solon's boys swam to victories in three of the eight individual events and were runners-up in two relays to put 261 points on the leaders' board. Hudson was second with 206 points.
Individual winners for the lady Comets were junior Maryn Bieganski, who touched in 56.36 in the 100-yard butterfly, and senior Gretchen Hestley, who took the 100 freestyle in 52.03. The 200-yard medley relay of Hestley, freshman Brianna Sciara, Bieganski and sophomore Annie Marquiss opened the meet with a winning time of 1:48.27. And the 400 freestyle relay of Marquiss, junior Emily Schwartz, junior Melissa Besman and Hestley finished it victoriously with a time of 3:33.42.
The Solon boys got individual wins from senior Chris Gluvna in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.43, junior Terrence Wong in the 100 butterfly at 51.05 and sophomore Jamie Gallagher in the 500 freestyle at 4:42.91. They added second places in the 200 free relay, with Gluvna, senior Greg Lavins, Wong and sophomore Jamie Gallagher finishing in 1:29.03, and the 400 free relay of Gallagher, sophomore Dan Telljohann, senior James Hrivnak and Wong clocking a 3:16.11.
The top four boys' finishers received automatic berths to the Division I state championships this weekend at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Gluvna qualified with a third-place time of 1:01.00 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Gallagher took fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.21.
The top five girls' finishers automatically qualified for the Division I state championships. Besman made the cut with third places for the Comets, finishing at 2:10.19 in the 100 IM and 5:04.39 in the 500 freestyle. Bieganski was fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.91, Schwartz was fifth in the 200 free at 1:55.74, and Marquiss took fifth in the 100 free at 53.00. Solon's 200 free relay of senior Paige Duffy, Bieganski, Kari Koeberle and Schwartz took fifth place with a time of 1:40.51.
