Owner says apartment complaints being addressed
By SUE REID
Progress being made in response to recent complaints by residents at the Liberty Hill Apartments in Solon, Councilman Robert N. Pelunis said Tuesday.
Mr. Pelunis, Mayor Kevin C. Patton and Planning Director Robert S. Frankland met with Jordan Goldberg, principal of the Liberty Hill Apartments, Tuesday, along with two of his representatives.
"The meeting was very positive," said Mr. Pelunis, whose Ward 2 includes the apartment complex.
"We went through all the complaints with the people from the company," he said. "They were very receptive." However, he noted, in order to protect the residents, the city will have its building commissioner and zoning inspector meet with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health within the next two weeks, as well as with representatives from the Goldberg Cos., to go through the buildings and make sure that everything can be addressed.
Mr. Goldberg said Monday that he walked through each of the buildings last week. There had been one issue of mildew, which is "fairly common in apartments," he said. "We went to the apartment the next day and serviced a small leak, which was the cause of the problem," he said.
"Within one week, we fixed all the mildew," Mr. Goldberg said. The drywall needed repair, he said. "The area had became wet, and, because we had not noticed, it sat there and had turned into mildew," he said.
"That is the only issue of mildew we know of," he said. "Every shower, if you don't clean it, will have mildew. As apartments become vacant, we will find mildew in showers that have not been kept clean. If people ask us to clean their showers, we will, to get rid of any mildew."
Last November, Mr. Goldberg said, a resident reported that there was a field mouse in an apartment, and that also has been handled.
"We have been Solon residents for many years, and we are reactionary" to problems, Mr. Goldberg said.
Mr. Pelunis had reported to City Council that the property manager was out fixing the roofs in the recent cold weather and was addressing other maintenance items, as well as the street lamps. In addition, he said, he was told by residents that the hallways were being cleaned and the smoke-detector batteries replaced.
"We have issues that do come up, and we work hard to correct them as a local family-owned management company which takes care of its properties," Mr. Goldberg said. "We are addressing all of the issues that have been brought to our attention and will continue to diligently work to satisfy our residents and provide a first-class apartment, as we expect nothing less."
