DONALD C. DEGEN
Degen, Donald C., age 82, passed away on March 24, 2009 at his home in Chagrin Falls. Loving husband of Faith M.; stepfather to Mark Vedder (wife Ellita) of Chagrin Falls and Denise Eichmann (husband Kenneth) of Crystal Lake, IL; grandfather of Katherine, Nicholas, Jennifer and Matthew. Born and raised in Bronx, NY. He went to sea at age 13, received a scholarship, and subsequently graduated from the New York Maritime Academy. He served in the US Navy and Navy Reserve. While employed by the Grace Cruise Line, he worked his way up to First Officer. He later worked as a Regional Manager for Chrysler Air Temp in Los Altos Hills, CA. In the early 1970's he moved to Chagrin Falls to become President of Quiggin and Son and later Airtron Heating and Cooling. He purchased May-Lynd HVAC and served as President and CEO until his retirement. He was an avid sailor and loved to travel worldwide with his wife. They were married for 31 years and together they sailed on 59 cruises covering six continents. He and his wife gave frequent travel lectures at local libraries. He enjoyed being a Charter Captain and instructor on numerous trips on the Chesapeake for the Cleveland Sailing School. He was a railroad enthusiast who collected model trains.
The family received friends at STROUD-LAWRENCE FUNERAL HOME in Chagrin Falls on Sun., March 29. A Memorial service was held Monday with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Chagrin Falls.
