FREDERICK AUSTIN STEM

Frederick Austin Stem, age 84, of Chag-rin Falls, Ohio, passed away peacefully April 8, 2009, at Bedford Med-ical Center. He was the beloved son of the late Donald C. Stem, DDS and Miriam R. Church Stem.

Fred was born in Chagrin Falls at home and lived in the same house for 84 years. He was a 1945 graduate of Chagrin Falls High School. Fred was born with mild cerebral palsy and was encouraged to take up drumming to increase his coordination. He took lessons at The Cleveland Institute of Music, played snare in the high school band, was the drummer for a dance band in the forties called The Patriots and played tympani in The Chagrin Valley Orchestra. Besides his love of music, he was an avid non-fiction reader, collected postcards, music boxes and automobile memorabilia. Fred was also a nature lover and could identify birds, bugs and snakes when asked.

Mr. Stem is survived by his sister, Frances Babinsky; niece, Jane Babinsky; cousins, Joan Brown Shaw, Catherine Campbell, Genie Church Mayo, and Hank Church.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Evergreen Hill Cem-etery. Arrangements were made by Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls.
