HOWARD JOHN CARSON
JOHN CARSON HOWARD
John Carson Howard, 85, passed away April 14, 2009, near his winter home in Carlsbad, New Mexico. John, a 54-year resident of Geauga County, living most of those years in Bainbridge, was born on June 23, 1923, in Douglass, Kansas. During World War II, he served on a landing ship in the U.S. Navy and rose to the level of Lt. (jg). He later graduated from the University of Chicago and spent the next 40 years working in accounting for health care institutions that included Hillcrest Hospital and Sunny Acres.
John was active in the Federated Church for many years, serving as a Sunday school teacher and as church treasurer. John was also a tireless volunteer for United Way, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and the Cleveland Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. His family often joked that John had served as treasurer of every organization he ever joined! A life-long Cleveland Indians fan, he began following the team as a boy in Kansas. When a job transfer brought him to Cleveland, he changed jobs so that he would never have to be transferred again. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Louise Turner, a school teacher, after 45 years of marriage. John is survived by his second wife, Alyce Pyle, whom he married in 1998. He is also survived by his three children, Cynthia (Robb) Hogg, William F. (Deborah) Howard, and Elaine (Gregory) Mersol, and by nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Family will receive friends Thursday, April 23, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Federated Church Family Life Center, 16349 Chillicothe Rd., Chagrin Falls, OH 44023. Funeral services will be on Friday, April 24, 10:00 a.m. at the Federated Church, 76 Bell St., Chagrin Falls, OH 44022. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Cleveland Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 23215 Commerce Park Drive, Suite 300, Beachwood, OH 44122.
