Storm-water projects get into full swing

By SUE REID

Solon Public Works Director James S. Stanek updated City Council at its last meeting about projects slated for this summer as part of the city's storm-water management program.

One project, set to begin in July, involves repair to the outfall structure on what is referred to as the Kappos property off of SOM Center Road (Route 91), north of Cannon Road. Mr. Stanek said the city is lowering the lake there to create more storage.

"We are picking up some storm-water management," he said. The project needs to be completed in dry weather, he noted.

Another project which the city is working on the final engineering for involves one of the lakes in the Sherwood subdivision on Cannon Road, east of SOM Center Road. Mr. Stanek said there is an issue there with culvert drainage and a head wall that needs to be installed.

"We will be going in there and replacing the pipe that goes under the road into the lake," he said. "Indirectly, this is part of our storm-water management program."

A sinkhole issue in the North Hill subdivision on SOM Center Road north of Cannon Road is being addressed, Mr. Stanek said. There are gaps in some of the storm sewers in that area which has allowed the soil to be carried in by the water and therefore causing sinkholes. That project should be completed in the next couple of weeks, he said.

In the area of dye testing in the "ABC" streets, Mr. Stanek said, there are 24 properties that have not yet responded to letters sent by certified mail by the city. Twelve were ignored, Mr. Stanek said, and 12 were returned undeliverable.

"We have to pursue other ways of making sure to get contact with them and obtain permission to dye test those properties," he said. There are another 24 properties identified with problems that have to be fixed by the July 31 deadline, he said. These properties were identified as having potential problems based on smoke testing done previously, he said.

"We went to do the dye test to lead us to exactly what the problem is."

Mr. Stanek also said his department will undertake the next phase of smoke testing this fall where smoke is sent up the sanitary sewer lines. The location has not been determined, he said.

"We're looking at the flow-monitoring testing and the historical records and base the next location on that," Mr. Stanek said.

Street sweeping throughout the city also is under way, he said. The entire city is done two to three times a year, he said.

"It's amazing how much materials come out of that," Mr. Stanek said.
